Choose your first indoor plant with confidence
The easiest plant is not the same for every home. Start with the light you have, the space you can give and the care routine you can repeat.

Read the room before choosing the plant
Check whether the window receives usable daylight, how far the plant will sit from it, and whether curtains or nearby buildings reduce the light.
- Observe the location at more than one time of day
- Avoid treating a windowless room as low light
- Keep leaves clear of heaters, air-conditioners and busy walkways

Match the growth habit to the space
Upright plants use less floor space, trailing plants suit shelves, and broad-leaved plants need room around the foliage.
- Snake plants are useful where floor area is limited
- Pothos works well on shelves with indirect light
- Monstera needs more room as its leaves mature

Plan the first week
Let the plant adjust before changing several things at once. Confirm drainage, observe the soil and avoid an automatic watering schedule.
