LOW-LIGHT GUIDE
Low light does not mean no light
Shade tolerance describes how a plant copes with lower light. It does not mean that a plant can grow indefinitely in a windowless room.
01
Assess the actual location
Look at the distance from the window, the direction of the light and obstructions such as deep eaves, curtains or neighbouring buildings.
- Observe how the light changes through the day
- Check whether you can comfortably read without room lights
- Treat windowless spaces as needing supplemental light or rotation
02
Recognise declining light conditions
Longer gaps between leaves, leaning growth, smaller new leaves and slow drying can indicate that the current position is too dim.
- Compare new growth with older growth
- Watch for soil that stays wet unusually long
- Rule out root and watering problems before making a diagnosis
03
Improve the situation gradually
Move the plant closer to usable daylight or introduce a suitable grow light. Avoid switching a shade-grown plant directly into strong sun.
- Move in stages to reduce leaf scorch
- Keep grow lights at the maker's recommended distance
- Reassess watering after the light level changes
